Of course, doing so will invariably mean the weapon ends up in the hands of the party, and I want to avoid accidentally giving something thats too OP to them.

My thought was that the weapon (a maul) would restore 2 lost HP (so you cant go above max HP with it) every time you connect with an attack.

I figured Id add some type of damage threshold (that is, you have to deal 10 damage on the hit to regenerate that hp), and it would obviously only work against creatures and probably wouldnt work against constructs or undead.

Is that too good In and of itself it doesnt seem like too much at this point.

My barb currently has 72 HP and hes the only one who would be proficient in my party.

Regenerating 118th of his HP a turn seems good, but not absurd.

Even if the wizard learns haste at some point the Barb regening a max of 8 HP (or 10 with a reaction) in a round seems good, but not overwhelming.

So what am I missing How would this property be exploitable in a way I havent thought of How could you use this to cheese Any advice or criticism would be welcome.

Continue this thread level 1 Druid 27 points 2 years ago My thinking is that 1 point of healing is worth about 2.2 points of damage in the early game and by late game 1 point of healing is worth closer to 1.5 points of damage.

So, a maul that steals 2 pts of health on a hit is of similar worth to a 2 maul.

If a player had to choose between a 2 maul and a 0 maul that heals 2 hp each hit, they might have a hard time deciding which is better.

It addsmaintains tankiness each round it hits, but never trivializes big damage a PC does take.

Gaining a couple HP per hit during combat isnt that big of a deal, but a less morally-restricted PC could turn any captive into a free well of out-of-combat healing.

A particularly savvy character could just travel around with a cage full of small animals he can sacrifice at will to heal up.

There are certainly restrictions you could add to curtail that power.

One interesting option might be to change the maul so that it provides temporary hit points instead of straight healing.

It will provide the same benefit of giving the barbarian an extra cushion of HP during combat, but prevent farming, and also reduce the benefits of exploiting means of gaining extra attacks.

The exact definition of that depends on the DM, and can be used to curtail such things if you really wanted to.

I agree, though, temporary hit points are the way to go for that reason.

If such a character wanted to spend GP on cages and small animals as a weak buff to temporary hit points that requires a full action to use, thats their prerogative.

Its not much different than buying healing potions, but much more flavorful.
