Motorola wasnt interested in matching Intel and AMD in the MHz Wars: it was making too much money from small, low-power PPC chips embedded in everything from printers to routers to cars.

So, Apple turned to IBM (the other member of the AIM alliance).

IBM took their POWER4 server chip, hacked off most of the cache, added the SIMD instructions and, viola, the G5.

This was goodin its day, the G5 was a hell of a chipand bad because, as you said, the G5, being essentially a server chip, ran hot and sucked a lot of energy.

Apple needed something squarely in the middle, and to provide this IBM wouldve needed to design a new family of chips.

It wouldve cost IBM hundreds of millions of dollars, and, at the time, Apple just didnt sell enough machines to IBM to ever make back that money.

Even the number of machines Apple sells today might not have been enough for IBM to recoup their investment.
